New York (TDI): During the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
At the heart of the talks was a mutual commitment to scale up cooperation in line with Uzbekistan’s national development priorities and the broader framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
President Mirziyoyev expressed his strong support for Secretary-General Guterres’ reform initiatives, aimed at modernizing the UN system to better meet contemporary global challenges.
Both sides welcomed the deepening relationship, noting that over 160 joint programs and projects are currently underway.
A significant milestone in this evolving cooperation will be the signing of a new five-year Cooperation Program, expected in October, which aims to further institutionalize joint efforts in development, health, education, and human rights.
President Mirziyoyev also highlighted Uzbekistan’s active role on the global stage, pointing to the successful adoption of 13 resolutions initiated by Uzbekistan at the UNGA in recent years.

The country has also been elected to several key UN bodies, including the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Human Rights Committee, and the Statistical Commission.
Further underscoring Uzbekistan’s leadership in international humanitarian issues, a high-level forum dedicated to the fight against childhood cancer and other critical illnesses, initiated by Uzbekistan, is scheduled to be held at the UN Headquarters.
The forum is expected to draw attention to pressing global health concerns and galvanize international support.
Preparations are also in full swing for the upcoming 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference, set to take place in the historic city of Samarkand, which aims to enhance cultural diplomacy and multilateral cooperation.
Secretary-General Guterres praised President Mirziyoyev’s address at the General Assembly, particularly his proposals on sustainable development, regional integration in Central Asia, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, youth empowerment, and the promotion of enlightened Islam.
The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to deepen full-scale cooperation in priority sectors and to develop new joint initiatives aimed at addressing both regional and global challenges.
