USAID Unveils Green Solutions for Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek (TDI): The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has unveiled a new initiative called the Green Solutions Activity, aimed at fostering sustainable practices among small and medium enterprises in Kyrgyzstan.

This five-year initiative is backed by a $24 million investment and focuses on promoting innovative green solutions, enhancing energy efficiency, and increasing the supply of renewable energy in the region.

“This investment represents a significant step in the U.S. government’s commitment to building a greener future in partnership with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic,” stated USAID Deputy Assistant Administrator Änjali Kaur during the launch event in Bishkek.

She emphasized that USAID will collaborate with local businesses and provide grants for the adoption of green technologies.

The agency will also engage with local banks and financial institutions to advance green finance initiatives.

The launch event took place at Kyrgyzstan’s first rooftop grid-connected photovoltaic solar plant located at the Kyrgyz State Technical University.

Developed with USAID’s support and inaugurated in December 2023, the 80-kilowatt solar installation is capable of generating 143,037 kilowatt hours annually.

This facility not only powers the university but also allows it to sell excess electricity back to the grid, effectively reducing operational costs and serving as a model for a sustainable energy future in the region.

Kyrgyzstan’s Green Economy Strategy

USAID’s initiative aligns with the Kyrgyz government’s green economy strategy, which aims to diversify energy sources and promote various forms of clean energy.

The regional Power Central Asia activity focuses on improving energy sector connectivity, enhancing decarbonization efforts, and boosting energy security and resilience, while also facilitating expanded cross-border electricity trade.
