Windhoek, 29 July 2022 (TDI): In a meeting that was held recently in Windhoek, the United States of America (USA) has reasserted its support for Namibia’s healthcare system.

It also supports the Ministry of Health and Social Services of Namibia’s aim to provide its citizens with good quality, accessible and affordable universal health coverage.

USAID to Namibia

The USA has been working with the government of Namibia and other institutions to provide assistance in various fields.

Since Namibia’s independence in 1990, the USA has been providing the state with USAID through financial, technical, and infrastructure support programs contributing a great deal to the country’s post-apartheid recovery.

PERFAR

The US President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PERFAR) has been collaborating with Namibia since 2005 to deal with the country’s growing AIDS problem and ensure such effective HIV/AIDS programs that are accessible to the Namibian people.

This plan has largely dealt with the prevention of HIV transmission in Namibia and it has also provided the country with condoms and other contraceptives as well as much other medical equipment for medical emergencies.

CDC

Also known as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, built its office in Namibia in 2002. While cooperating with the MOHSS i.e. Ministry of Health and Social Services of Namibia, CDC basically helps the Namibian healthcare workforce.

It enables them to detect, prevent and deal with public health problems while primarily focusing on the epidemic of HIV/AIDS in Namibia. They also maintain the treatment and care of those who are living with HIV/AIDS.

In the Covid-19 pandemic situation in Namibia, CDC has also done tremendous work for quarantine management, risk communication, vaccines, and various other healthcare activities.

Future Prospects

This meeting mainly discussed the work needed to be done in the future to target more areas that require immediate health facilities.

However, some progress has been achieved yet there is a long way to go and the USA stands in support of Namibia in this mission.
