USA Donated Pfizer Vaccine Shots to Sri Lanka

Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, 2 October 2021 (TDI): The Unites States donated 800,000 Pfizer vaccine doses to Sri Lanka today.

The USA donated Covid-19 Vaccine doses to Srilanka under its global COVAX initiative in collaboration with Gavi. Gavi is a Switzerland-based organization that works to vaccinate the world against deadly diseases.

 

Earlier in August, the USA  donated 100,000 Pfizer vaccine shots to Sri Lanka whereas in July Sri Lanka received 1.5million Moderna Covid-19 Vaccine doses from the US.

COVID-19 in Sri Lanka 

During pandemics, the US has continued supporting the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health, UNICEF, and WHO to help vaccinate as many people as possible. The US has donated 2.6 million vaccines and over 17.9 USD million in emergency supplies and critical services to Sri Lanka. USAID is looking for effective distribution, administer and safe transport vaccines to Sri Lanka. This assistance will help Sri Lankan needs to improve health and mitigate the pandemic negative economic impacts.

US-Sri Lanka Relations

US- Sri Lanka relations are based on mutual interests and a shared commitment to the ideals of democratic governance. Both countries are characterized by moderate non-aligned foreign policy, territorial integrity, and democratic institutions.  The US is supporting Sri Lanka on ethnic reconciliation especially after the end of the decades-long civil war in 2009. There have remained high-level visits to Sri Lanka from the US on regular basis.

Over the years, since Sri Lanka’s independence US has offered more than 2 billion USD. Through USAID the support has remained in diverse socio-economic sectors.
