US Warns French Firms to Comply With Diversity Ban

Washington (TDI): The Trump administration has ordered some French companies with US government contracts to comply with his executive order banning diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, underlining the extraterritorial reach of American policies and their potential impact on European corporate practices.

The firms have been told to confirm their compliance in a questionnaire entitled “Certification Regarding Compliance With Applicable Federal Anti-Discrimination Law,” according to Reuters.

The move comes amid growing economic and political tensions between the US and Europe following Donald Trump’s election on an “America First” slogan.

It also raises questions about the practical changes targeted firms may require to implement, given differing approaches between the US and France.

The documents will also spark concerns in European boardrooms that the US government is widening its fight against DEI policies overseas, at a time when Trump’s actions on tariffs and security relations have upended transatlantic ties.

There was no indication that the firms receiving the letter were selected based on their presence in the US.

Meanwhile, defence electronics firm Thales (TCFP.PA) and oil major TotalEnergies (TTEF.PA) both with operations in the United States did not receive it, according to spokespersons for the companies.

An official close to French Finance Minister Eric Lombard said the issue would be taken up with the US administration.
