US troops Taking Care of Afghan Evacuees

-

Washington, 4 September 2021 (TDI): According to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin lll, US troops and volunteers at Ramstein Airbase are continuing to perform an outstanding job providing excellent service and secure temporary homes to Afghan refugees guaranteeing their safety, comfort, and well-being until they embark on their next journey.

Ramstein Air Base is a US Air Force base in Rhineland-Palatinate, a German state in the southwest. The United States Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa, as well as NATO Allied Air Command, have their headquarters there.

After the Taliban took over Kabul on August 15, the US started transporting thousands of civilians out of the city every day. Many were sent to US military bases in Qatar or Kuwait. However, by the end of that week, such bases could no longer adequately sustain any more people. Ramstein, which has acted as a vital transit hub for troops and equipment throughout the 20-year war in Afghanistan, was considered for one more operation regarding Afghanistan.
