Statement of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken of July 25 Referendum of Tunisia.

Tunis, 29 July 2022 (TDI): US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken issued a statement on the 25th July 2022 Constitutional Referendum of Tunisia which was characterized by low voter participation.

The stance of the United States on this issue was that it strongly supports democracy in Tunisia. Like many aspiring Tunisian people, the US is also concerned that whether the new constitution’s drafting may weaken democracy in the country.

Promoting Inclusivity in the Referendum Process

In order to make sure that the confidence of millions of Tunisian people who did not participate in this process is restored, a more inclusive and transparent reform process is needed.

According to the US Secretary of State, the US urges to adopt such an electoral law. This can facilitate a broader community even those who opposed the constitutional referendum.

Building a Democratic Political Future

To build a democratic and more dynamic political future for Tunisia it is important for its people to participate in the electoral process.

For a secure and prosperous future, the aspirations of the Tunisian people should be protected. They should be encouraged to participate by campaigning etc.

Eroding Democracy of Tunisia

For about a year the democratic norms of Tunisia have been eroding. This has clearly acted as a setback to the Tunisian people’s efforts and achievements that they had gained since 2011.

Both internationally and in Tunisia, many questions have been raised regarding the democratic path that Tunisia has opted for.

This is mainly because of the constitutional governance’s suspension, executive power’s consolidation, and the Independent Institutions’ weakening that have occurred since 25 July 2021.

US supports a Democratic Tunisia

US has claimed to support Tunisia with the help of its allies in paving the way for the country to achieve a democratic government.

The kind of government that allows space for free debate and also protects human rights and various other humanitarian rights.
