US House Targets China for Political Gain: Experts

-

Washington, 11 September 2024 (TDI): The US House of Representatives is expediting the passage of up to 28 bills aimed at China, addressing a range of issues including Hong Kong, restrictions on Chinese biotech firms, drones, and electric vehicles (EVs).

Chinese experts view this legislative flurry as a strategic move to use China as a “bargaining chip” for political gain.

In response to a bill passed on Monday that seeks to limit business with Chinese biotechnology companies under the guise of “national security,” China’s Foreign Ministry has strongly opposed what it describes as discriminatory measures.

Coined “China Week” by US media, the legislative push reflects broader efforts to counter China’s development and influence, while supporting American allies in the Asia-Pacific region.

Proposed Bills

The proposed bills encompass various restrictions on Chinese firms, including those in the biotech, EV, and drone sectors, limitations on Chinese nationals buying farmland, expanded export controls, and renewed measures against alleged espionage targeting US intellectual property.

Lü Xiang, a research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted that these measures are designed to obstruct China’s role in global supply chains and slow its development.

Li Haidong, a professor at China Foreign Affairs University, suggested that this legislative agenda is intended to undermine the Biden administration’s diplomatic efforts and consolidate GOP unity.

He cautioned that such actions could disrupt global supply chains and harm American businesses.
