US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is on a visit to Pakistan

Islamabad, 19 April 2022 (TDI): Ilhan Omar, a member of the US Congress and an elected representative, is on a visit to Islamabad to meet the country’s senior leadership.

The American official will meet the representatives of the newly-elected government in Islamabad. Moreover, she will also visit Azad Kashmir during her visit to Pakistan.

Ilhan Omar represents Minnesota’s 5th congressional district in the US Congress. She was elected in 2019 as a member of the Democrats.

After the annexation of Kashmir in 2019 by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congresswoman called for an immediate restoration of communication, respect for human rights, democratic norms, religious freedom, and de-escalation in Kashmir.

Representative Ilhan Omar

The Congresswoman was born in Somalia during the country’s civil war. She lived part of her early life in a refugee camp in Kenya before coming to the USA in the 1990s.

She is the first Somali American and the first naturalized citizen of African birth in the United States Congress. Moreover, she is also the first woman of color to represent the state of Minnesota.

Meanwhile, she is also one of the first two Muslim women (the second one is Rashida Tlaib) to serve in Congress. She was elected as the Minnesota House Representative for District 60B in 2016.

It made her the highest-elected Somali-American public official in the United States and the first Somali-American State Legislator. In addition, Representative Omar served as the Assistant Minority Leader, with assignments to three house committees.

The committees are Civil Law and Data Practices Policy, Higher Education & Career Readiness Policy and Finance, and State Government Finance.

Ilhan Omar has been a stringent critic of Israel and its aggressive and oppressive policies towards Palestine. In addition, she remained in strong opposition to President Donald Trump.

She opposed his ‘Muslim ban’, an attempt to bar people from several Muslim-majority states from entry into the US. She has faced racist and Islamophobic abuse throughout her political career.
