Washington, D.C. January 27, 2025 (TDI): The United States has announced that it will not impose tariffs on Columbian products and services following an agreement in which Colombia pledged to accept deported migrants without any restrictions.
Columbia has welcomed the US decision, emphasizing its commitment to cooperation with the states on regional migration issues.
Background
Initially, U.S. President Donald Trump had warned that he would put a 25% tax on all products and services from Colombia. This happened because Colombia’s President, Gustavo Petro, did not allow U.S. military planes to bring deported people back to Colombia.
Petro had earlier denied entry to US military deportation flights by saying that migrants should be returned “with dignity and respect.”
Now, both countries have made a new deal. Colombia has agreed to accept deported people coming on U.S. military planes without any limitations or delays.
Official Responses
Colombia’s Response
On January 25, Colombia’s Foreign Ministry, Luis Gilberto Murillo, presented the official statement of the Colombian government, stating, “We have overcome this impasse through dialogue, ensuring the dignity of our returning citizens.” He further added that Colombia remains committed to receiving deported citizens under humane conditions and maintaining open communication and relations with the U.S.
Tensions began between the two states after Colombian President Gustavo Petro publicly criticized Trump’s policies on social media. He referred to Trump’s proposed tariffs as an economic blockade on the Colombian state. However, swift diplomatic efforts have led to peace, with Gustavo Petro’s office now preparing to facilitate the return of deported Colombian citizens from the United States of America.
