New York, 24 September 2022 (TDI): USA Secretary of State Antony Blinken met Foreign Minister of China, Wang Yi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly 77th session.

The two leaders discussed the need “to maintain open lines of communication and responsibly manage the US-China relationship, especially during times of tension.”

Remarks by USA Secretary of State 

During the meeting, Blinken emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait for regional and global security and prosperity. Moreover, the United States is committed to its “One-China policy,” the statement read.

He emphasized that the United States is still willing to cooperate with the People’s Republic of China in areas where the respective interests of both states overlap.

Remarks by Foreign Minister of China

Wang stated that it was “necessary” to foster an environment conducive to the restoration of normal talks between Beijing and Washington and to return relations to a path of stable and steady growth.

Wang remarked, “It is urgent for both sides to establish a right way for the two major countries to get along with each other in a responsible attitude towards the world, history, and the peoples from two countries, to promote the stability of the relationship between the two countries”.

Earlier in the week, Wang also met with former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. He is known as the architect of USA relations with communist China.

During Wang’s meeting with Kissinger, he underscored that a “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan is China’s aspiration.

The talks between ministers are anticipated to build the basis for a meeting between the President of the USA, Joe Biden, and the President of China Xi Jinping. The meeting would be their first interaction since Biden assumed office.
