US Chief of Naval Operations visited Japan

Tokyo: July 25, 2021 – (TDI):  Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) of the United States of America, Admiral Michael M. Gilday visited the Japanese Ministry of Defense and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). This is his second visit to Japan after he assumed the office of Chief of Naval Operations.

He met the leadership of both ministries, namely; Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi, State Minister of Defense Yasuhide Nakayama, Chief of Staff of the Joint Staff Gen. Koji Yamazaki, and Chief of the Maritime Staff Adm. Hiroshi Yamamura.  During his visit, he labeled the partnership between both nations as a key player in securing peace in the Indo-Pacific region. He expressed that their multidimensional and multilateral partnership leads to a secure and stable Indo-Pacific.

Admiral Yamamura attributed this meeting with Admiral Gilday as a promotor of the US-Japan naval alliance. He reaffirmed the commitment of the alliance to work mutually for a ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific.’
