US and Bangladesh Celebrate 50 years of Relations

Washington D.C, 4 April 2022 (TDI): US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken released a statement to celebrate fifty years of US-Bangladesh relations. Antony Blinken began his statement by recounting the history of bilateral relations between the two countries.

He said, “50 years later, our countries collaborate on virtually every issue that matters to our people, and the ties between Bangladeshis and Americans grow deeper and more intertwined with every generation.”

The Secretary of State also mentioned public health cooperation. Moreover, he mentioned that the US imported more Bangladeshi goods than any other country in 2021.

Furthermore, a statement was also released by the Ambassador of the United States to Bangladesh, Peter Haas. Recalling recent cooperation on Covid19, he said “the United States (US) provided more than 61 million COVID-19 vaccines.

Bangladesh is the largest recipient of U.S.-donated vaccines worldwide. That is what friends do.” He concluded his statement by remarking that “The United States and the people of Bangladesh want the same things.

They want a vibrant, secure, and prosperous democracy, an accountable judicial system, and basic human rights for everyone. Bangladesh can count on our partnership for decades to come to accomplish these shared goals.”

US-Bangladesh Relations

The United States recognized Bangladesh on 4th April 1972. Four days later, the United States and Bangladesh agreed to establish diplomatic relations at the Embassy level.

The United States has been one of the principal development partners of Bangladesh since independence, providing over US$6 billion through USAID since 1972.

Currently, Bangladesh is a major American ally in South Asia. The two countries have extensive cooperation on matters of regional and global security, counter-terrorism, as well as climate change.

Aside from that, the US is one of the largest sources of foreign direct investment in Bangladesh. Commercial and economic ties between the two countries are thriving.
