Background
The meeting will take place at G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting in Bali on Friday. The meeting is announced after the Biden administration’s resolve to consider lifting tariffs on Chinese goods.
Former President Donald Trump’s Presidency placed these tariffs on China. They used the tariffs as a measure to counter China.
Moreover, between 2018 and 2019, the US placed sanctions worth $550 billion under its Sanctions Act.
“There are a lot of different elements to this, especially since the previous administration imposed these tariffs in such a haphazard way, in a non-strategic way,” said White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
Counselor of the Information Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry tweeted about the lifting of additional tariffs and sanctions. They said that fair treatment of Chinese enterprises is good for both China and the US.
The removal of tariffs on imported Chinese goods will strip 1% of inflation in the US.
According to Daniel Kritenbrink, assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, Washington’s goal was to “manage responsibly the intense competition between the United States and the PRC.
In addition, Blinken would likely raise areas of potential cooperation between the two powers. This will include the climate crisis, global health, and stemming the transnational flow of narcotics.
Additionally, according to reports, the two sides are likely to discuss Beijing’s continued support of Russia and the Russian Invasion of Ukraine.
