Uruguayan Foreign Minister meets Antony Blinken on his visit to the US

Washington DC, 13 April 2022 (TDI): Uruguayan Foreign Minister, Francisco Bustillo, met the US and OAS officials during his visit to the United States.

Meeting with US officials

Francisco Bustillo met the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to discuss bilateral and global issues. Both leaders recognized the exceptional state of bilateral relations.

Moreover, they noted both countries share opinions on the major global issues. Foreign Minister Bustillo and Secretary Blinken agreed to launch an Annual Bilateral Interministerial Dialogue.

The dialogue between Ministers of the two countries will coordinate work in priority areas. These areas of bilateral importance include politics, economy and trade, investment, technology, culture, and academics.

In addition, the officials agreed to continue working on strengthening bilateral trade and promoting investment. These two factors play a key role in post-pandemic economic recovery.

Both officials shared their views on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Also, they discussed the political and economic situation in the Americas. Finally, they expressed support for the preparatory work for the next Summit of the Americas.

Thereafter, the Uruguayan Foreign Minister called on Brian Nichols, Undersecretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs at the Department of State.

They held a detailed conversation in which they exchanged views on the best way to further strengthen the bilateral relationship in all areas.

Likewise, they discussed the realities facing the Western Hemisphere and their challenges. They also talked about the contribution that each country can make to provide the best solutions to various international issues.

Meeting with Secretary-General of OAS

During his visit, Minister Bustillo also held a meeting with the Secretary-General of the OAS, Dr. Luis Almagro. Both officials reviewed the political situation of the Americas and how international events are impacting OAS member countries.

Furthermore, they discussed the ways in which these countries deal with these impacts. Meanwhile, they discussed the efforts for the next Summit of the Americas. They also agreed to renew permanent communication channels between Uruguay and the OAS.
