Montevideo, 19 March 2022 (TDI): The Uruguayan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francisco Bustillo hosted a multilateral meeting with several diplomats, mainly from the Western-allied countries.

Diplomatic officials from European, North American, and East Asian countries to Uruguay attended the meeting. The distinguished participants included the Ambassadors of Spain, Portugal, and Italy.

Likewise, the Ambassadors of Greece, Romania, Switzerland, France, the European Union, and Canada, along with Charges d’Affairs of Hungary, United Kingdom, Unites States of America, Japan, and the Republic of Korea attended the event.

The agenda of this multilateral meeting was to consolidate the international consensus on the situation in Ukraine. Moreover, they deliberated on the strategies to support the victims of war.

Foreign officials in Uruguay requested the meeting to explain their position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict to the Uruguayan authorities and to express gratitude for Uruguay’s support in this regard.

All the countries attending the meeting reached a unanimous consensus regarding their position on the war in Ukraine. These countries support Ukraine against Russia.

In addition, the participants expressed mutual concerns about the ongoing military action and consequent loss of life, property, and the migrant crisis in Europe.

They stressed the importance of finding a peaceful solution as soon as possible in line with international law and norms. They also reiterated their willingness to support the hundreds of displaced persons morally, economically, and politically.

Uruguayan Reaction to the War in Ukraine

Russia began a military operation in Ukraine in February. This action has led to several international developments and repercussions all around the world.

On 18th March, the Uruguayan government held a virtual meeting with its private sector. The aim was to prepare themselves for the potential economic repercussions of the war in Ukraine on its export industry. Specific difficulties of the industry were discussed during the meeting.

They agreed to work on a plan that allows efficient contact among people and businesses and maximizes the available resources. The Russian, German, and Dutch Embassies also took part in the meeting.
