Islamabad (TDI): The Urdu translation of the Portuguese novel Nenhum Olhar (Blank Gaze) by José Luís Peixoto has been launched in Pakistan.
The book, translated into Urdu by famous Pakistani author Muhammad Atif Alam as “Viraan Nazar” was launched at a launch hosted by the Pakistan Academy of Letters in Islamabad. Portuguese Ambassador al Frederico Silva also attended the event.
The event exemplifies how literature can bridge cultures and foster mutual understanding between nations.

The translation of the worldwide literary novel, which the Financial Times selected as one of its best books of 2007, was an initiative of Najeeba Arif, Chairperson of the Pakistan Academy of Letters, and Sultan Nasir, its Director General.
It followed the interaction sessions held between the Embassy of Portugal last year, also attended by the author José Luís Peixoto and the Pakistan Academy of Letters in the federal capital.
José is one of Portugal’s most prominent writers, famous for exploring human emotions and relationships through novels, poetry, musical lyrics, and short stories.

José became famous through his debut novel, Nenhum Olhar (Blank Gaze), which won the prestigious José Saramago Literary Prize in 2001.
Today, he enjoys international acclaim with his work being translated into more than 30 languages worldwide.
