Urdu Poetry Takes Center Stage in Illinois, US

Illinois (TDI): Pakistan’s Consul General in Chicago, Tariq Karim, attended a literary event organized by Sabeel Center, in Illinois. An Urdu poetry book’s launch and a mushaira were the main highlights of the event. 

Renowned Urdu poets from Pakistan and across the United States were present to put heart and soul into the mushaira, including Abbas Tabish.

In his remarks, the Consul General “praised the Pakistani diaspora for their efforts in promoting Pakistani culture, the Urdu language, and poetry,” as per a social media post shared by the Consulate General of Pakistan in Chicago. 

He also “highlighted the importance of cultural platforms like mushaira, which bring together people from diverse backgrounds through the universal language of poetry.”

The Consul General took a moment to praise the talent, dedication and passion of the Urdu poets who were present at the event, and encouraged the Pakistani-American community to keep showcasing the true image of Pakistan through such events. 

CG Karim also acknowledged and appreciated the efforts of Sabeel Center for being a hub of cultural, traditional and literary activities. 

The Sabeel Center for Community Development is a versatile space dedicated to a variety of programs. It also houses a museum which is a year-round attraction for the Pakistani community.

The center also provides free community empowerment programs for Muslim and urban youth, seniors, new immigrants, and refugees, along with mental and emotional health support.

It also features a test kitchen for halal cuisine training, catering to all levels of culinary expertise, and offers educational resources on halal products and ingredients for all age groups.  

Earlier in 2024, Consul General Tariq Karim attended the Aalmi Naat Conference & Grand Aalmi Naatia Mushaira organized by Sukhanwar Chicago & Hareem-e-Naat at the Sabeel Center in Illinois.

The conference featured renowned poets from around the world, served as a platform for promoting Naat, Urdu poetry and cultural exchanges. There was also a book launch of “Baad-az-khuda”, written by Chicago-based Urdu poet Abid Rasheed.
