New York (TDI): The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned the suicide bombing at a mosque in Islamabad on 6 February, describing it as a heinous and cowardly act of terrorism.
In a press statement issued by Council President James Kariuki and members denounced the attack, which claimed the lives of at least 32 Pakistani nationals and left 92 others injured. The militant group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL/Daesh) has claimed responsibility.
Council members extended their deepest condolences to the families of the victims and expressed solidarity with the government and people of Pakistan. They also wished a swift and full recovery to those wounded in the attack.
Reaffirming that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations poses one of the gravest threats to international peace and security, the Council underscored the need to ensure accountability. Members stressed that those responsible, including perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors, must be brought to justice.

The statement urged all states to cooperate actively with Pakistan, in line with international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to support investigations and counterterrorism efforts.

Council members reiterated that acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation or the identity of those responsible. They reaffirmed the obligation of all states to combat terrorism by all lawful means, consistent with the United Nations Charter and international legal frameworks, including human rights, refugee and humanitarian law.
