UNIFIL Spanish Peacekeeper Infantry, Lieutenant Pablo Vazquez stated that they are conducting a patrol in coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces. Also, they are in the area of Arab el Louaize, near the Blue Line.
The main objective of the patrols is to show the support provided by UNIFIL troops to the Lebanese Armed Forces. In addition to that, it aims to prevent incidents between Lebanon and Israel along the Blue Line.
The Blue Line is the border between Lebanon and Israel. There are two types of patrols. One that is in coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces. Apart from that another type of patrol independently, with the tactical groups.
The independent patrols help to maintain security and stability for the local population, whether it is from patrols, observation points, or other missions.
Importance of Joint Patrols
UNIFIL’s patrols, both independent and with the LAF, have been important to maintain calm and stability along the Blue Line. Training sessions contribute to better strategic coordination of preparation.
The strategic partnership between LAF and UNIFIL is of great importance due to the positive results. It also helps in maintaining the security of Southern Lebanon.
Patrolling lets UNIFIL and the LAF see what’s happening up close and show their presence on the ground. The local community greatly supports these activities and missions.
This is evident through the opinions and the reactions of the local population when these patrols pass through some villages. Therefore, supporting and strengthening the LAF is a crucial part of UNIFIL’s mandate.
