Kuwait City, 26 August 2022 (TDI): The UN General Assembly President, Abdulla Shahid concluded his official visit to Kuwait from August 23 to August 26.

During his visit, the UNGA President held meetings with several government officials and the Prime Minister. Also, he convened a meet-up with the officials of the UN in Kuwait.

Moreover, upon his departure, Abdulla Shahid expressed his gratitude to the Government, the Foreign Minister, and the people of Kuwait for their warm hospitality.

Highlights from the visit

The UNGA President commenced his official visit to Kuwait on 23 August. He was received and welcomed into the country by the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for International Organizations, Abdulaziz Aljarrallah.

In addition, Abdulla Shahid called on the Minister of Information & Culture and the Minister of State for Youth Affairs, Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi.

During the meeting, he commended the “For the youth, with the youth” approach by the country which has led up to empowering young Kuwaiti men and women in decision-making processes.

Furthermore, the UNGA President also paid a courtesy call on the Former Prime Minister of Kuwait, Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah at the Shuwaikh palace.

In a tweet, Abdulla Shahid thanked the former Prime Minister for his knowledge, vision, gracious hospitality, and kind words in support of his Presidency of Hope.

Meeting with the Prime Minister & Foreign Minister

The UNGA President paid a call on the Prime Minister of Kuwait, Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

Besides, he expressed his appreciation and gratitude for the generous invitation and Kuwait’s steadfast support throughout his Presidency of Hope.

Moreover, Abdulla Shahid applauded Kuwait’s crucial role in the regional and humanitarian mediation operations.

Likewise, he also praised the country for adopting the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and incorporating it into its 2035 Vision.

In addition, the UNGA President also interacted with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait, Dr. Ahmed Nasser Mohammed Al-Sabah. The meeting discussed the issues pertinent to peace and security in the region extensively.

Furthermore, he commended the role Kuwait takes as an “exemplary model for wisdom”, where it plays an integral role in diffusing tensions toward a more stabilized region. He mentioned this about the Arabian Gulf country’s mediation efforts.

Noteworthy visits of the UNGA President

Additionally, Abdulla Shahid at the Sheikh Soud Nasser Al-Sabah Kuwait Diplomatic Institute addressed and interacted with the young diplomats.

On the occasion, he said that he’s confident that these young diplomats will uphold Kuwait’s robust and constructive international engagement in the years to come.

Moreover, UNGA President emphasized the urgency to curb poverty, eliminate gender inequality, maintain peace, safeguard the environment, and assure the resiliency of our multilateral institutions.

The United Nations Kuwait, led by Resident coordinator, Tarek el Sheikh also arranged a meeting with Abdulla Shahid. He lauded the UN Kuwait for its contribution to strengthening the close relationship between the United Nations and Kuwait.

Lastly, Abdulla Shahid met with the Deputy Director-General of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, Waleed Al-Bahar.

According to the UNGA President, Kuwait plays a significant role in directing humanitarian aid and financing development projects as an International Humanitarian Center through the Kuwait Fund.
