UNEA 6 coming up to advance sustainable global environment

-

Nairobi, 29 January 2024 (TDI): The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) is no stranger to the world of environmental stability and sustainability. Under the formation of the UNEP, the UNEA 6 would again for the 10th year in a row gather people from all around the globe to come together and discuss issues that are constricting the very safety of our environment.

It is an Assembly that strives to end pollution in the air, ground, and water, through an all-encompassing method.

The sixth session of the UNEA 6 will materialize from the 26th of February to the 1st of March in 2024, at the UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

The purpose of the UNEA 6 as a grand body on the decision-making of the environment, is to bring about symmetry between humanity and nature, enhancing the lives of the most unguarded people around the world.

The main focus of the UNEA 6 is to shed light on how multilateralism can aid in addressing the ‘triple planetary crises’ of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, pollution, and waste.

Member states and stakeholders will under the umbrella of UNEA 6 debate and consider the advancement of the Decade of Action, all the while keeping in close view the links between the three planetary environmental crises.

Unlike the perception at the inception of UNEP 50 years ago in 1972 during the Stockholm conference, which viewed environmental development as an obstacle to societal growth, today’s triple planetary crisis highlights that the state of the planet and climate has taken a central role in the environmental arena.

Decade of Action

The Decade of Action comes under the Sustainable Development Goals, which incentivizes bringing an end to poverty, safeguarding the planet, and sustain a more peaceful world. With already only 10 years to go, an aspiring promise is on its way to tend to the 2030 goals, by bringing together governments, civil societies, and businesses.

Moreover, the Decade of Actions aims to fasten sustainable solutions, that begin with poverty, gender non-discrimination, climate change, and equalizing the financial gap.

The UNEA 6 is anticipated to establish a foundation for strengthening forecasted goals and regionally cooperative achievements through 30 official side events and associated activities. The United Nations, Member States, and partners will collaborate to focus on planetary action.

Additionally, the United Nations Secretary General in September 2019, urged every sector of society to come together for a decade of action under three levels which consisted of global action, local action, and people action.

Moreover, a more rigorous approach should be adopted after the COVID–19 pandemic, where robust actions must be taken to tackle with issues of crisis, and re-apply efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals in the Decade of Action.

With support from various backgrounds such as politics, science, and the society, the Assembly will provide an opportunity to world leaders, groups from civil societies, the scientific body, and the private sector to mold and enhance the environmental policy on a global agenda.

Furthermore, the United Nations Environment Assembly assists world leaders and individuals to stand unified in the approach to environmental sustainability and to construct a framework of a coherent environmental action plan. Under this, the UNEA 6 will bring to actuality the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals.
