Quito, 27 September 2022 (TDI): Foreign Minister of Ecuador Juan Carlos Holguin met the delegates of the Subcommittee for Prevention of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (SPT), at the Presidential Office of Ecuador and stressed the issue of the prevention of torture.

The government of Ecuador showed its commitment to work on the completion of obligations of the international conventions to prevent the torture of any kind.

The Ecuadorian government added that it will protect the citizens from the deprivation of liberties. Moreover, the government will take action to address the structural problems during the implementation of the conventions against torture.

The United Nations delegation was led by Maria Luisa Romero. The visit of the delegation to Ecuador and meeting with the Foreign Minister was to work on the recommendations regarding the international Convention against Torture.

Maria Luisa Romero also presented recommendations for the prison system of Ecuador for the prevention of every type of torture and inhumane practice against detainees.

Visit of UN Delegation to Ecuador

The UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) organized this visit to Ecuador, from 25 September 2022 to 1 October 2022. Ecuador was at the top of the list of individuals facing death due to torture in its prisons.

The members of the subcommittee were alarmed about such developments inside Ecuador. Maria Luisa Romero visited the country intending to implement the recommendations by the UN inside the prison systems of Ecuador. The UN delegation added that they are already working with the independent watchdog of Ecuador that is working on the issues related to torture inside the Ecuadorian prisons.

Furthermore, the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) of Ecuador will provide support by the UN to observe the conditions of detention inside Ecuador. It will also report independently on the deprivation of liberty to the inmates inside the Ecuadorian prisons.
