UN Special Coordinator urges action on Israel-Gaza Crisis

New York, 19 October 2023 (TDI): UN Middle East envoy Tor Wennesland called for a thorough investigation into the recent strike on a Gaza hospital. The devastating attack resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives.

Over 500 Palestinians died in a tragic Israeli strike at Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City, confirmed by Gaza’s health ministry. The Israeli military claims the attack, among the deadliest on a hospital in years, resulted from a misfired Palestinian Islamic Jihad rocket.

Tor Wennesland briefed the Council on his challenging efforts to halt ongoing hostilities, describing the situation as one of the most critical moments for Israelis and Palestinians in 75 years. His update emphasized the urgent need for peace amid escalating tensions.

Tor Wennesland condemns Hamas attacks on Israel, including hostage seizures. He warns of a dangerous situation, fearing it could profoundly impact the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the entire Middle East.

After decades of conflict and failed attempts at resolution, the international community remains unable to broker a just political solution, according to UN envoy Tor Wennesland. Recent events have reignited tensions and alliances, amplifying the risk of a dangerous escalation in the Israel-Gaza crisis.

UN Special Coordinator Wennesland emphasized the immediate release of hostages by Hamas and the unhindered flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

He called for global collaboration to halt hostilities, prevent conflict escalation in the region, and cautioned against provocative actions in the West Bank and Lebanon.

Wennesland underscored the importance of adhering to UN resolutions, international law, and previous agreements, emphasizing the necessity of a long-term political solution for the Israel-Gaza crisis.

Tragically, over 3,000 lives, including 14 UNRWA staff, have been lost in Gaza, with 12,000 others injured and hundreds missing. The crisis demands immediate attention and humanitarian aid.
