Baku, 3 September 2024 (TDI): The United Nations has commended Azerbaijan for its commitment to enhancing climate transparency, highlighting the country’s efforts in this critical area.
Vladanka Andreyeva, the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, expressed her appreciation during a high-level dialogue titled “Boosting Climate Transparency through Universal Participation in the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF)” held in Baku.
“The UN urges all countries to submit their first biennial transparency reports (BTR) by the end of this year and to provide comprehensive data on greenhouse gas emissions across all sectors of their economies,” Andreyeva stated.
She emphasized that these reports are vital for monitoring progress in combating climate change and ensuring the implementation of national action plans (NDCs).
She added that the UN would continue to support Azerbaijan in its preparations for COP29 and the launch of the Baku Global Transparency Platform.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) is scheduled to be held in Azerbaijan in November this year.
The decision was made at the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11 last year. Baku is expected to host around 70,000 to 80,000 international guests during the event.
UN Framework Convention on Climate Change
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system.
The “COP” or “Conference of the Parties” is the convention’s highest legislative body, which oversees its implementation.
The convention currently includes 198 participating countries, and unless otherwise agreed, COP meetings are held annually. The first COP was convened in Berlin in March 1995, and the secretariat is based in Bonn.
