The IMRF meeting aims to review the progress made at the local, national, regional, and global levels which focuses on implementing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM).
Since the adoption of the GCM in 2018, IMRF 2022 is the first chance for the Member States, the UN System, and other stakeholders to gather and discuss the successes and challenges to the implementation of GCM.
IMRF 2022: A Milestone of Historic Significance
International Organization for Migration (IOM), a specialized agency focused on migration, is the coordinator of the UN Network on Migration. IOM is responsible for offering effective and coherent system-wide support for the implementation of the GCM.
Also, IOM takes a role to support the organization of the IMRF event. IMRF is the first high-level global meeting since the implementation of GCM. With such significance, IMRF includes four interactive multi-stakeholder round tables, a policy dialogue, and a plenary.
Moreover, there will be an intergovernmental Progress Declaration signed at the end of the event. This forum targets at providing a platform for global and national actors to consolidate collaborative action.
Furthermore, the international community has a chance to reflect upon the achievements made under the umbrella of GCM. Therefore, nations around the world have an opportunity to exchange ideas & strengthen cooperation to guarantee the rights of migrants.
What is GCM?
The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM) is the first negotiated inter-governmental agreement prepared under the auspices of the United Nations.
GCM has the advantage to cover all dimensions of international migration. Moreover, the Member States adopted the GCM at an intergovernmental conference on migration.
The conference was held in Marrakesh, Morocco on 10 December 2018. At that time, Member States agreed to review the progress of GCM through a mechanism named IMRF.
