New York, 25 September 2021 (TDI): UN posted Secretary-General Speech during the UN General Assembly meeting in which he stressed taking actions against the extreme climate change to maintain peace in the world. The news was published on 23 September 2021 in which the Secretary-General discussed the report released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
He said that the threats are clear and present and it is never too late to act to ensure climate action. This will help to maintain international peace and security. He expressed that it is an alarming situation for humanity and we need to act to maintain it. He told the Security Council that opportunities to avoid the extreme climate impacts are rapidly closing. All members with the G20 states in the lead have to take bolder climate action to maintain peace and security.
The Secretary-General mentioned that every region is affected by climate changes, wildfires, flooding, droughts, and other extreme weather events. No region is immune to it and the effects are profound and they mix with the past or present conflicts. He advised all Member States to accelerate progress in their nationally determined contributions by COP26 and take immediate actions. He added that to achieve this target, all Member States have to cut global emissions to 45% by 2030. Moreover, he said it is important that at least 50% of climate finance all over the world is dedicated to establishing resilience and supporting adaptation.
