Geneva, July 5, 2021 (TDI) — The Permanent Pakistan Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Khalil Hashmi has been elected to preside over the UN meeting on Consumer Protection Law and Policy. The meeting will be held under the auspices of the UN’s trade and developmental body, UNCTAD. The participation of Italy, Saudi Arabia, Portugal, Germany, and Argentina is reported.
The body aims to address the key issues on the emerging trends in consumer protection to ensure equitable global markets. Specifically, law enforcement against infringers, dispute resolution, consumer redress, policies for the digital economy, and better implementation of UN Guidelines for Consumer Protection will be the topic of discussion. The long-term agenda is to advance consumer interests in governmental policymaking. Besides this, policies on the digital economy, disadvantaged consumers, data protection, and consumer rights are also to be debated.
