New York, 29 September 2021 (TDI): UN took a social media platform to raise awareness about Food waste. Food waste not only affects the environment but also affects the resources that produce them. On this International Day of Food Loss and Waste, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) explains the advantages of reducing food waste.
Food waste weakens the food system all over the world because when food is lost it impacts directly on the resources that produce this food. This causes a negative impact on other resources like water, energy, labour, land, and capital. Moreover, the dumping of food waste in landfills affects climate change, for example, it leads to greenhouse gas emissions. It also causes an adverse impact on food security and food availability which led to swelling the cost of food. However, food systems all over the world can’t be resilient if they are not sustainable.
Since 2014, the number of people affected by hunger has increased slowly and tons and tons of food is wasted on an everyday basis so reducing food losses is very necessary in the world. This international day is a chance to raise awareness and to slow down the rate of people who have been affected by hunger.
