UN Climate Week Starts in Addis Ababa Overlapping with Africa Climate Summit

Addis Ababa (TDI): The second UN Climate Week of 2025 (CW2) has officially opened in Ethiopia’s capital, marking a pivotal moment in the global climate action calendar. The first week was hosted by Panama City in May.

Hosted at the Addis International Convention Centre (AICC) and organized by UN Climate Change (UNFCCC), the second week runs from 1 to 6 September, under the theme “Dialogues for Ambition and Implementation.”

Bringing together national negotiators, implementers, development banks, private investors, civil society actors, and Indigenous Peoples, CW2 emphasizes connecting policy pledges with tangible solutions that improve livelihoods, through stronger economic growth, cleaner energy access, better health outcomes, and elevated living standards.

The program features an Implementation Forum (3–4 September), which focuses on challenges like adaptation finance, climate-smart agriculture, forestry, and community empowerment.

According to UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell, Climate Week offers a rare chance to “share and scale up real‑world solutions,” delivering climate action that resonates more deeply with people’s everyday realities.

Deputy Executive Secretary Noura Hamladji added that forums like this bridge the gap between global negotiation halls and local, on ground realities.

CW2 is strategically aligned with the Second Africa Climate Summit (ACS2), scheduled to follow immediately with pre summit events from 5-7 September and the summit itself from 8-10 September.

ACS2, convened by Ethiopia in collaboration with the African Union, will spotlight Africa-led solutions and strategies, spanning renewable energy, nature-based technologies, green industrialization, and climate finance, as the continent marches toward COP30 in Brazil later this year.

Local officials underscore the significance of this dual convening. Mensur Desse, Director of Environment and Climate Change Agreements, highlighted that CW2 reframes African nations not as passive victims but as dynamic innovators, and noted that about 1,500 delegates are expected to participate.

With implementation firmly at its core, Climate Week in Addis Ababa has set out to hope for a new trajectory of inclusive, action-driven climate leadership, anchored in Africa.
