New York, 4 October 2021 (TDI): UN General-Secretary, António Guterres celebrates World Habitat Day by creating awareness regarding sustainable urban actions. However, the theme of World Habitat Day 2021 is Accelerating urban action for a carbon-free world. This highlighted that urbanization is 70% responsible for carbon dioxide emissions globally because of transport, energy, buildings, and waste management accounting for the bulk of urban gas greenhouse emissions.
This day will encourage local governments to develop actionable zero-carbon plans till the international climate change summit COP26 is going to be held in November 2021. On this Occasion, the General-Secretary stated, “the urgency of improving living conditions has been brought to the fore by COVID-19, which has affected livelihoods of millions of people globally. Some of the key responses to the pandemic include clean water and sanitation with proper distance maintenance but it is quite difficult to implement these measures”.
