United Nations (TDI): A United Nations General Assembly committee has adopted four disarmament-related resolutions proposed by Pakistan, underscoring Islamabad’s ongoing commitment to regional and global peace and security.
The resolutions, passed by the Assembly’s First Committee (Disarmament and International Security), garnered strong support from member states despite current challenges to the global non-proliferation and disarmament regime.
The resolutions, which cover issues of regional disarmament, conventional arms control, and Confidence Building Measures (CBMs), are expected to receive final endorsement from the General Assembly next month.
Among the resolutions, “Regional Disarmament” and “Confidence-building Measures in the Regional and Sub-regional Context” were adopted by consensus, while the resolution on “Conventional Arms Control at the Regional and Sub-regional Level” received 179 votes in favor, with India as the sole opposing vote and Israel abstaining.
Diplomats acknowledged Pakistan’s consistent efforts to promote arms control and restraint, with broad support for initiatives aimed at fostering peace and stability by maintaining a balance of defense capabilities among states within the same region.
