Ukrainian Flag carried to the top of K2 by climber Iryna Galay

Baltistan: 30 July 2021 (TDI)

Iryna Galay is the first woman from Ukraine to summit K2, the world’s second-highest mountain peak. K2 is located in the Karakorum mountain ranges in the northwest of the Himalayas, at an elevation of 8,611 meters.

After reaching the summit, Iryna Galay carried the Ukrainian flag in her hands, devoting her climb to Ukraine’s 30th anniversary of independence. She disproved the idea that only professionals can climb K2, as was previously believed in the climbing community. In 2016, she became the first Ukrainian woman to summit Everest.

Another Ukrainian climber, Dmytro Semerenko, was on the Karakoram summit with Iryna Galay and did it without the need for supplementary oxygen.

A night earlier, first climbers summited K2, including a 19-year-old Pakistani, Shehroz Kashif.

Other groups followed on Wednesday, July 28, 2021.
