Ukraine Hits Russian Airfield, Oil Depots

-

Kyiv, 3 August 2024 (TDI): Ukraine’s military Saturday said it had attacked Russia’s Morozovsk airfield and several oil depots and fuel storage facilities in three Russian regions overnight.

The attack on the airfield hit an ammunition depot where Russian troops stored guided aerial bombs among other equipment, the army said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in a statement on the Telegram messaging app that Russian combat aviation must be destroyed wherever it is, by all effective means. It is also quite fair to attack at Russian airfields. Ukraine needed this joint security solution with its partners.

The Ukrainian president has repeatedly urged his Western allies for permission to use their weapons for long-range strikes on Russia, in addition to attacking military targets close to the border.

He said on Saturday that Russian troops had used more than 600 guided aerial bombs to attack Ukraine in the past week. The attack on oil depots and fuel and lubricant storage facilities in Rostov, Belgorod, and Kursk regions set fire to at least two oil tanks, according to the Ukrainian military report.

In Russia, local officials said that tanks at a fuel storage depot in the Kamensky district of Rostov region caught after a drone attack.

The regional governor of Belgorod also said Ukraine-launched drones caused a blaze at an oil storage depot there, adding that it was extinguished and no one was harmed.

Ukraine has dramatically stepped up its use of long-range drones this year to strike Russian oil facilities, attempting to damage sites fueling Russian troops and the country’s economy in Moscow’s 29-month-old invasion.

Ukrainian military also said that it had sunk a Russian submarine and damaged an S-400 anti-aircraft missile system in the illegally-occupied Crimean peninsula.

The military said its attack had considerably damaged four launchers of the ‘Triumf’ air defence system on Friday.
