UK Requests Closure of Afghan Embassy

-

London, 9 September 2024 (TDI): According to information that surfaced on Sunday, the UK government has requested to close the Afghan embassy.

The ambassador of Afghanistan to the UK, Zalmai Rassoul, was informed of the decision.

The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’s Embassy in London is set to formally close the operations on September 27, 2024, at the official request of the host nation, according to a statement released by Mr. Rassoul.

“The requirements of the host country’s government informed this decision.

The Afghan Embassy in London would like to express its gratitude to all of its associates, fellow countrymen, and associated organizations for their earnest cooperation throughout this time.”

The decision about the closure of Afghan Embassy comes after the Taliban authority in temporary power in Afghanistan recently declared that all 14 embassies’ documents, including the London one, were void

Due to their lack of international legitimacy, the ambassadors working in these twelve embassies—who were chosen by the previous administration of Afghanistan—refuse to carry out orders from the current Taliban government.

Numerous embassies persisted in opposing Taliban control, reportedly in spite of financial difficulties and operating autonomously.

Last year, Foreign Policy magazine published a report that described how Western-educated diplomats working in these missions.

Many of whom have spent decades establishing Afghanistan’s post-2001 institutions—now find themselves stranded abroad, grappling with feelings of despondency, abandonment, and disillusionment.

The international community has not acknowledged the Taliban government in Afghanistan despite its three-year rule.

Its leaders are essentially outlawed and the nation is shut off from the international financial system as a result of the group’s violations of human rights and ties to radical organizations.

Several Western governments, including the United States, have refused to hand up their embassies to diplomats nominated by the Taliban, but some, including Russia, China, and Pakistan, have done so.
