ISLAMABAD, September 11, 2024 (TDI): On Wednesday, the United Kingdom (UK) has begun ending all direct air services between the UK and Iran as a part of new sanctions imposed on Tehran. This actions is a follow up of allegations that Iran delivered missiles to Russia for use in Ukraine.
The British government stated that it is canceling its bilateral air services arrangements with Iran, which will significantly limit Iran Air’s ability to operate flights to the UK.
According to its website, Iran Air currently offers direct flights between London and Tehran three times a week.
UK Halts Direct Air Travel with Iran
The move comes as Western powers, including the UK, unveiled additional sanctions targeting Iran for its role in supplying short-range missiles to Russia.
The UK Foreign Ministry indicated that these new sanctions follow “repeated warnings” to Tehran to stop transferring weapons to Russia.

“We will continue to use every measure at our disposal to pressurize Iran to stop its support for President Putin’s illegal invasion,” said UK Transport Secretary Louise Haigh.
“This is why we have begun the ending of all direct air services between the UK and Iran.”

In addition to halting air services, the UK is joining the United States in imposing sanctions on key Iranian individuals and organizations involved in facilitating military support to Russia, particularly those connected to ballistic missile and drone supply chains.
The sanctions also target several Russian entities, including five cargo ships involved in transporting military supplies from Iran to Russia.
