Abu Dhabi, 24 October 2023 (TDI): During a recent UN Security Council meeting on UNMIKosovo, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) represented by Counsellor Mohammed Bastaki delivered a statement reaffirming its commitment to dialogue, diplomacy, and the promotion of peace in the region.

The UAE’s statement highlighted several key points, First, the UAE emphasized the importance of courage in pursuing dialogue and diplomacy, commending the steps taken by the leadership of both Serbia and Kosovo to de-escalate tensions.

The UAE recognized that dialogue was not merely the absence of conflict but a proactive effort towards peace.

Second, the UAE reiterated its full support for the EU-facilitated dialogue, recognizing it as the most effective means of resolving outstanding issues between Serbia and Kosovo.

The EU-facilitated dialogue had generated hope for greater stability and prosperity in the region, marking a significant breakthrough in their relations.

The statement also acknowledged the recent high-level meetings within the framework of the EU-facilitated dialogue and called for continued momentum in implementing the agreements reached.

The UAE expressed concern over the violence and instability in northern Kosovo that emerged following a challenging election period.

It condemned the attacks against KFOR peacekeepers and law enforcement officials, emphasizing the need for the rule of law and accountability for those responsible.

The tragic events of September 24, in which a policeman was killed and others were wounded, were noted with deep regret.

The UAE firmly condemned attacks on law enforcement officials and extended its condolences to the affected families.

The UAE recognized that these incidents had the potential to push the region back into a darker period in its history and, therefore, commended the efforts of leaders from both sides to de-escalate the situation.

The statement highlighted that trust and confidence-building were essential components of any lasting peace.

The UAE appreciated the ongoing efforts of UNMIK in building confidence and trust between communities in Kosovo, in collaboration with the government and community leaders.

As the UAE concluded its statement, it reiterated its unwavering commitment to supporting efforts that aimed at achieving peace and prosperity for the people of both Serbia and Kosovo.

Thus, the UAE’s statement at the UN Security Council meeting reflected a commitment to peace and stability in the region, as well as its support for dialogue and diplomacy as essential tools in resolving conflicts.

The UAE urged all parties to maintain momentum in implementing agreements and to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric that could exacerbate tensions.
