UAE Tightens Enforcement of Residency Laws, Warns of Heavy Penalties

Abu Dhabi (TDI): The United Arab Emirates has moved to significantly tighten enforcement of its residency and immigration regulations, warning that serious violations, including sheltering or employing people who entered the country illegally, can now result in penalties of up to Dh5 million (around $380 million) and jail terms.

According to the Federal Law on the Entry and Residence of Foreigners, anyone found providing accommodation, employment, transport or any form of assistance to illegal entrants faces fines starting at Dh100,000 (Rs7.6 million).

The penalties increase sharply for repeat offences, involvement of multiple people, or organised networks, and include mandatory imprisonment.

Authorities stressed that offering shelter or jobs to undocumented residents is treated as a national security violation, not just an administrative offence.

The tougher approach also targets misusing visas such as working while on a tourist or visit visa with fines beginning at Dh10,000 (Rs760,000) and the possibility of jail depending on the severity of the case.

Some of the most severe punishments apply to forgery or manipulation of residency permits or related documents, offences that can draw prison sentences of up to 10 years.

Officials say the enforcement drive aims to safeguard public security, protect the labour market, and maintain the integrity of the UAE’s identity and residency systems.
