Ashgabat, 8 May 2024 (TDI): The United Nations Development Program and the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan (MoHMI) signed an agreement on 3 May for the project “Procurement of health products for the control of infectious diseases in 2024-2025”. The long-term project, with a budget of 34 million dollars, is fully funded by the government of Turkmenistan.
The respective initiative symbolizes the strong commitment of the Government of Turkmenistan to improving the healthcare system of the country.
The primary objective of the project is to ensure universal access to high-quality services for tuberculosis (TB) and other various infectious diseases across Turkmenistan by:
Securing equipment for TB, HIV, skin diseases, reproductive health, viral hepatitis C services, safe blood transfusion, high-quality medication, and upgrading health care capacity.

Facilitating a seamless transition for the TB project, which is financed by the Global Funds to fight malaria, AIDS, and tuberculosis, and integrating the engagements previously covered by the Global Funds.
Ensuring the project’s continuity, quality, and long-term sustainability within Turkmenistan by transforming it into domestic funding by the end of 2027.
Moreover, the ongoing project aims to expand upon the successes of previous years and will sustain the provision of tests and medications for communicable diseases.
In addition to the treatment, the project will implement new technologies, enhance infection control measures, offer technical assistance, and provide maintenance support.

Over the years, UNDP and MoHMI are collaborating in public health sector but most notably, since 2010, the UNDP country office has been designated as the Principal Recipient of the TB grant from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria.
