Baghdad (TDI): Iraq and Turkmenistan have inked a crucial gas supply deal, paving the way for enhanced energy cooperation between the two nations.
Under the agreement, Iraq will import up to 20 million cubic meters of natural gas daily, with deliveries routed through a swap arrangement via Iran.
This development is seen as a strategic move to alleviate Iraq’s chronic energy shortages.
Iraqi Electricity Minister Ali Fadel, in a statement, underscored the importance of the contract in addressing Iraq’s fluctuating gas supply.
“In the winter months, Iraq will receive 10 million cubic meters of gas daily, while during the summer, this will increase to 20 million cubic meters,” the minister elaborated.
He added that the agreement includes compensation mechanisms to ensure continuity in the event of supply disruptions.
Iraq, which has long been dependent on Iranian gas imports, has struggled to maintain stable supplies due to financial constraints and payment issues—compounded by the impact of US sanctions on Iran.

The addition of Turkmenistan as a supplier is expected to moderate these challenges, offering Iraq a more diversified and reliable energy source.
At the same time, Iraq is also exploring other energy partnerships and is investing in domestic gas projects to further bolster its energy security.
Turkmenistan a Major Gas Exporter
Turkmenistan, known for being one of the region’s largest natural gas exporters, has been strengthening its energy ties across the region.
It is already a significant supplier to China, having exported gas worth $5.67 billion in the first half of 2024.

Furthermore, during a recent visit to Iran, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, former president of Turkmenistan and chairman of the People’s Council (Halk Maslahaty), announced plans to increase Turkmen gas exports to Iran to 40 billion cubic meters annually, solidifying its role as a key player in the regional energy market.
This deal represents a significant step forward for Iraq in its ongoing efforts to secure a stable energy supply, while also highlighting Turkmenistan’s growing influence in the global energy sector.
