Tehran, 31 August 2024 (TDI): Turkmenistan and Iran have agreed to enhance cooperation in natural gas and transport.
The announcement was made during Turkmenistan’s former president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov’s visit to Iran on August 28.
The visit resulted in four strategic memorandums of understanding, with a key agreement aimed at establishing Iran as a regional gas transfer hub.
The agreements include plans to increase Turkmen gas exports to Iran to 40 billion cubic meters annually. It was also decided to hold discussions on exporting Turkmen electricity to Iran.
In the transport sector, the countries will focus on expanding cargo transport along key railway routes, including Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran and Armenia-Iran-Turkmenistan-Kazakhstan.
Negotiations for a comprehensive transportation deal are set to begin next month under the intergovernmental committee led by Iran’s transportation minister.
Bilateral Ties
In recent years, energy ties have been a cornerstone of Iran-Turkmenistan relations. Both countries have worked to enhance cooperation in natural gas, with Turkmenistan being a significant gas supplier. They have discussed various projects to increase gas exports and integrate their energy infrastructures.

The Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway, completed in 2014, has been a key development, facilitating trade and transportation. Efforts have also focused on expanding and improving transportation routes to boost regional connectivity.
Relations between Iran and Turkmenistan have seen frequent high-level meetings and agreements, emphasizing mutual interests in energy and trade.
