Ankara, 17 January 2023 (TDI): Foreign Minister of Turkiye, Mevlut Cavusoglu, met with the United Nations (UN) Special Envoy for Syria, Geir O. Pedersen, to discuss ways to provide support to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution (UNSCR) 2254.
The meeting, which focused on key areas of the UNSCR, reaffirmed Turkiye’s support for the political process and the constitutional committee in Syria.
Turkiye has been a strong member of the UNSC for some time now, and the government has contributed greatly to the success of the council in various ways, including assisting in peacekeeping and providing humanitarian support in the region.
Syria, on the other hand, is currently facing a significant crisis of political and civil unrest due to certain geopolitical incidents.
The meeting between Turkiye’s Foreign Minister and the UN Special Envoy was essential to ensure that the support of Turkiye to the UN was well affirmed.
During the meeting, the UN Special Envoy, Geir O. Pedersen, stated that Turkiye’s support in the region to promote peace, especially in Syria, has been much appreciated and they are working hard to ensure that peace and calmness are restored in the area.
He also highlighted that the vision of the UN to ensure that the world is free from incidences of terrorist activities is a great concern for them and the government is working hard in collaboration with the UN to achieve this goal.
He further thanked the government of Turkiye for their work and assured that the discussions raised will be implemented.
In response, the Turkiye Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, thanked his guest for the time being spent and expressed hope that all that was discussed will be of benefit to all parties.
