As part of his farewell visits, Ambassador Munir met the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, last week. The UNSG appreciated his outstanding contribution to multilateral diplomacy during his successful tenure.
Ambassador Munir leaves his position at the end of this month after serving as Pakistan’s Permanent Representative for six years. He was appointed in 2019 and his most recent success at the UN entails winning Pakistan the non-permanent seat at the Security Council with an overwhelming majority vote.
After his term ends, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad will take over as the new Permanent Representative and the head of Pakistan’s UN Mission.
Ambassador Munir is celebrated both nationally and internationally as a seasoned diplomat. Pakistan also conferred the Award of Hilal-i-Quaid-e-Azam upon Ambassador Munir Akram for his remarkable service.

Prior to leading the UN Mission in New York, he served on Pakistan’s Mission as an Ambassador between 2002 and 2008. He also served as the Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva for seven years, from 1995 to 2002.
Earlier, he also assumed the positions of Pakistan’s Ambassador to the European Council, Belgium, and Luxemburg.
At his departure, he is leaving Pakistan’s mission to the UN in a very diplomatically favourable environment. It is the eighth time that Pakistan has taken on as a non-permanent member of the UNSC.
Under his leadership, Pakistan’s Mission represented the country very vocally.
