During World War I, one of the most brutal battles took place on the Gallipoli Peninsula in the Ottoman Empire. Britain and France launched the campaign to help secure their Russian ally and aim to capture Istanbul.
In response, the Turkish forces successfully repelled both a naval attack and the subsequent land offensive. Tens of thousands of soldiers died in this battle, on both sides.
This failure of the Allied invasion boosted Turkish morale and contributed to the start of Türkiye’s War of Independence.
