Manila, 28 April 2023 (TDI): Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan bestowed the “Humanitarian Medal” on Major Sayin Erwin Diploma of the Philippine Air Force, Team Leader of the 82-man Philippine Humanitarian and Rescue Team.

This honor was handed in the Presidential Complex in Ankara on April 25, 2023, following the PH Team’s assistance in the aftermath of the earthquake in Türkiye last February.

The Philippines has a long history of sending humanitarian aid and support to countries in need, including Turkey.

In 2013, the Philippines sent a search and rescue team to Turkey after a powerful earthquake struck the country’s western region, resulting in the deaths of more than 600 people.

The award given to the team serves as a reminder of the importance of international cooperation and solidarity in times of crisis.

It highlights the need for countries to work together to provide relief and aid to those affected by natural disasters and other emergencies. It proves that even in the darkest of times, hope and kindness prevail.

On February 6, 2023, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey. The earthquake struck at a depth of seven kilometers in Kahramanmaras Province’s Pazarcik area. The death toll from the earthquake in Turkey has risen to 50,783.

Massive devastation occurred in the provinces of Hatay, Gaziantep, Kilis, Osmaniye, Malatya, Adiyaman, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, and Kahramanmaras.

Strong vibrations were reported in Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Cyprus as a result of the earthquake that rocked Turkey.
