TTP Emerges as Global Terror Umbrella: Pakistan

-

United Nations, (TD): In a significant address to the U.N. Security Council, Pakistan’s Ambassador Munir Akram warned that the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is evolving into an umbrella organization for various terrorist groups, posing a growing threat to global security.

Speaking during a debate on the situation in Afghanistan, Akram highlighted the protection the TTP enjoys from the Taliban, emphasizing that this alliance aims to destabilize neighboring countries.

“While some may focus solely on the threat from Daesh, they must also consider the implications of a strengthened TTP in the near future,” he cautioned, underscoring the urgent need for collective vigilance among nations.

Akram reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to take national action and collaborate with regional and international partners to counter the TTP’s threat.

“The TTP, which we refer to as Fitna Al Khawarij, is a significant concern for Pakistan and should alarm the entire region and the world,” he stated, detailing the group’s cross-border attacks that have resulted in numerous civilian and military casualties.

Three years post-Taliban takeover, the situation in Afghanistan remains dire, with Akram asserting that normalization hinges on addressing fundamental issues such as terrorism, human rights, political inclusion, and the plight of Afghan refugees.

“Terrorism, both within and emanating from Afghanistan, is the most pressing threat to the country, the region, and the world,” he remarked, citing a recent U.N. report.
The report labeled TTP as Afghanistan’s largest terrorist organization, increasingly supported by the Taliban for cross-border operations.

Terrorist Groups in Afghanistan

While the Afghan Interim Government (AIG) combats ISIL-K (Daesh) without complete success, Akram pointed out that other terrorist groups, including Al-Qaeda and the TTP, are thriving within Afghanistan, enjoying safe havens provided by the Taliban rulers.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to a stable Afghanistan, Akram emphasized the necessity of political inclusivity for lasting stability.
