Tsunami Alerts Issued Across Pacific Ocean After Russia’s Massive 8.8 Earthquake

Russia (TDI): Evacuations are underway in Japan, Hawaii, and some parts of the US West Coast as an earthquake of magnitude 8.8 hit Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering tsunamis across the Pacific Ocean.

In Russia’s Sakhalin region, the power grid has been damaged due to an earthquake that resulted in a power outage, and thus, electricity has been shut off in the whole area. Authorities in the area informed that everyone has been evacuated to safety.

The United States Geological Survey reported on Tuesday that an earthquake struck in Russia’s far east, 136 km (84 miles) east of the coastal city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

It is reported that in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, tsunami waves as high as 3-3 meters (10-13 feet) have been recorded, whereas 30 cm waves have struck a city in northern Japan.

Tsunami alerts in various parts of the countries such as the United States, China, Philippines, Hawaii, Mexico, Peru, Indonesia, and Japan have been issued.

Governor Josh Green of Hawaii has advised people to evacuate as per the orders and stay calm and don’t panic where whereas US President Donald Trump has ordered Americans to be on alert for tsunami warnings and has advised them to stay away from the coast.

It is also expected that Tsunami waves will arrive at Hawaii’s shores shortly, after Japan’s northern coast saw waves of 40 cm.

Japanese authorities have ordered 1.9 million people to evacuate as the tsunami waves are expected to continue for more than a day.

Hawaii Governor Green said that a wave has passed through the Midway Atoll island between Japan and Hawaii at 6ft (1.8m).

“We’re still expecting a significant wave,” he adds, and they will only give the all clear when they feel there is “total safety.”

The US Coast Guard in Honolulu has ordered the evacuation of commercial vessels from the ports, and all harbors are shut down to incoming traffic and any vessel near Hawaii is ordered to remain offshore until tsunami waves have passed.

It is also reported that many flights that were bound to Hawaii have been diverted mid-air, most of them redirected back to their airports of origin.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center updated that tsunami waves are now impacting Hawaii. It was 4ft (1.21m) tall, the center says, with 12 minutes recorded in between waves. The Meteorological agency said that tsunami waves in Japan are expected to reach up to 3 meters high.

Evacuations are going on in Ecuador as well due to tsunami warnings. Ecuador’s Secretariat for Risk Management said in a statement that “A tsunami warning has been established for the Insular Region Galapagos, which indicates the immediate suspension of maritime activities, as well as preventive evacuations of beaches, docks and low-lying areas”.

China’s tsunami warning center announced that waves of between 30cm and 1 meter are expected to hit the country’s eastern coast.

The center said that “Based on the latest warning and analysis results, the Tsunami Advisory Center of the Ministry of National Resources has determined that the earthquake has triggered a tsunami, which is expected to cause damage to certain coastal areas of China.”
