Washington, 5 August 2024 (TDI): US Vice President Kamala Harris could unveil her choice of running mate within hours, after interviewing at least three from her shortlist on Sunday.
Governor Tim Walz, Governor Josh Shapiro, and Senator Mark Kelly had meetings with the presumptive Democratic nominee at her Washington home.
Other aspirants may have also had interviews virtually over the weekend.
Harris will be formally nominated at the top of the ticket later on Monday and then hold her first event with her vice-presidential choice in Philadelphia on Tuesday.
She will take on Republican Donald Trump in the presidential race in November.
Here is a look at the names believed to be in the frame to be her pick for vice president, starting with the three interviewed on Sunday.
Josh Shapiro, Pennsylvania governor
This charismatic and popular governor could help Harris capture Pennsylvania—a must-win for Democrats.
The 51-year-old captured headlines after quickly working to rebuild a collapsed bridge on a pivotal Philadelphia highway last year.
He would be the first Jewish vice-president if chosen by Harris and the Democratic ticket proved victorious.
Mark Kelly, Arizona senator
The swing-state senator has an impressive resume that could attract voters on both sides of the aisle.
The former Navy combat pilot and NASA astronaut has spent over fifty days in space on multiple missions.
But Kelly, 60, is new to serving in Washington.

Tim Walz, Minnesota governor Walz is a battle-tested leader who served twelve years in Congress before becoming governor in 2018.
He has gained national attention for his strategy, calling Trump and JD Vance “weird”.
The phrase caught on with many Democrats, including Harris. “He’s just a strange, weird dude,” Walz said of the former president during a fundraising event on Monday.
