Thailand Showcases Culture in Pakistan Through Film and Water Festivals

Islamabad (TD): The Thai Embassy in Islamabad hosted two cultural events—Thai Movie Night and Water Festival: Splashing for Happiness, in Islamabad and Lahore, to enhance Thai culture and people-to-people relations between Thailand and Pakistan.

The movie night was held at the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) from May 22-24, and again at the Ali Institute of Education in Lahore on June 20th, 2025.

The event involved the screening of Khan Kluay, the most popular Thai animated feature film based on the story of a brave elephant who became the royal war elephant of King Naresuan. The film places family values, bravery, and loyalty at the center.

On the sides of the movie night, Thai music, food tasting, and cultural performances were also arranged for the visitors. Thai movies available on Netflix Pakistan were also displayed for popularity.

The Ambassador of Thailand in Pakistan, Rongvudhi Virabutr, in his introductory remarks, said that cultural narrative is a key tool for the establishment of diplomatic relations, adding, “Soft power can build connections where formal diplomacy sometimes cannot.”

The second event, the Water Festival, was held on June 21 at Beaconhouse National University (BNU) in Lahore. Modeled after Thailand’s traditional Songkran, the activity featured water battles, cultural games, Muay Thai performances, Thai cooking demonstrations, and Som Tum competitions.

Student participants enjoyed Thai snacks, herbal products, souvenirs, and fruit juices such as Malee coconut water. A sponsored lucky draw by Thai Airways also had a grand prize of a free round-trip ticket to Thailand.

The Consul General of Thailand in Lahore, Narintorn Sukkaseam, said that such activities are a testament to Thailand’s commitment to cultural diplomacy. He continued, “These festivals help bring our people closer through shared experiences.”

The Thai Embassy has also announced that it plans to enhance cultural exchanges in near future. With Thai food, movies, and travel gaining popularity among Pakistanis, the Embassy is committed to strengthening bilateral relations via such cultural outreach initiatives.
