Bangkok, 22 December 2021 (TDI): Kingdom of Thailand and Japan Co-hosted 1st Mekong-Japan SDGs Forum on Tuesday.

The summit held virtual due to the prevailing Pandemic situation across the world. In that sense, the 1st Mekong-Japan SDGs Forum was titled  “Decisive Decade; Actions and Count Down Toward 2030.”

At the 12th Mekong-Japan summit in 2019 in Bangkok, they had endorsed the initiative of Mekong-Japan initiative for SDGs toward 2030. Japan SDGs forum is also part of this.

Earlier it was Green Mekong Forum which was Co-hosted by Japan and Thailand six times.

During the conference, the two sides discussed multiple sectors to cooperate including partnerships for health, sustainable econ recovery. They also discussed green and inclusive societies between Japan and Mekong countries to achieve SDGs.

Thailand was represented by the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand for the Mekong Cooperation Arunrung Phothong Humphreys.

The Forum allowed Thai diplomats to appreciate Japan’s innovative role in ACMECS.

Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) is a cooperation framework. The countries include Cambodia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

The Thai Ambassador also asked for closer Mekong-Japan cooperation on public health. He also noted a need for collaboration in green & digital transformation at the Mekong-Japan DG-Level Meeting.

The representatives of other Mekong countries including Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar also joined the virtual Forum.

Mekong is one of the world’s great rivers. This river flows from the Tibetan plateau and runs to six countries.

This includes countries such as China, Myanmar, Thailand, Lao PDR, Cambodia, and Viet Nam.
